Navigating HIPAA for Food Organizations

One of the challenges for community-based food organizations who partner with health care providers can be managing how to share information while also maintaining patient privacy. The Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation (CHLPI) advises community food organizations on strategies for navigating the health care rules around Protected Health Information (PHI) as part of their Food Is Medicine focus. They will offer a free introductory webinar for Vermont-based organizations on Tuesday, February 22nd from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Email hlabun@bistatepca.org to register.

This webinar is being presented by the CSA and Health Care Community of Practice. For more background on the HIPAA topic, Feeding America and CHLPI have produced a Navigating HIPAA resource guide (2021). CHLPI also recently published a set of issue briefs that address topics in HIPAA, data collection, and program evaluation for the GusNIP Produce Prescription programs - the set of briefs is linked here. There were two relevant panels at the Nutrition Incentive national convening as well, recordings linked here and also here (you may need to register to get the link to work).

Obviously the most important part of the introduction is how to remember whether the acronym has two P’s or two A’s. Just keep in mind the phrase “It’s HIPAA, not Hippo”. Two A’s. It stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

This webinar is being presented as part of the Vermont CSA and Health Care Community of Practice.
